KitchenAid Fridge Freezer Door Not Closing / Sealing

When your KitchenAid fridge freezer door isn’t closing or sealing, it can have a negative effect on how well the appliance keeps your perishable items cold. Without a good seal, the cold air inside the fridge will begin to leak out, which means the inside of the fridge won’t be able to maintain the right temperature. The fridge will then begin to work harder, trying to reach and keep the set temperature. This not only increases your energy bill, but it also puts extra wear and tear on the appliance.

When the KitchenAid fridge freezer door won’t close or seal, it is typically because the fridge is tilted a bit forward. Try adjusting the front of the KitchenAid fridge so that it is just a little higher than the back of the fridge. This should allow the doors to close easily.

Another potential cause of the KitchenAid fridge freezer door not closing or sealing is the seal on the door being dirty. When dirt, grime, and debris begins to build up, it will prevent the door seal from properly sealing shut. This can cause a gap that allows the air inside the fridge and freezer to escape.

Clean the seal with warm soapy water and then rinse it with clean water. Use a rag to wipe the seal dry and then try closing the door. Additionally, wipe the inside of the fridge where the door seal makes contact with warm soapy water as well.

Another thing to check for when the fridge freezer door won’t close or seal is whether or not the seal is actually damaged. If there are parts of the door seal that are cracked, ripped, or missing, then the door won’t seal as it should. Replacing the entire seal will solve the problem.

Reasons Why KitchenAid Refrigerator Freezer Door Not Closing

Checking the refrigerator

In order to work properly, the KitchenAid refrigerator freezer door will need to close and close up tight. Without a tight seal, the appliance cannot keep your food and drinks as cold as it should.

The KitchenAid refrigerator freezer door not closing may be the result of a fridge or freezer that is too full, a dirty or damaged seal, the door being closed too hard, the door being out of alignment, or the door hinges malfunctioning.

If the freezer is too full, then that could prevent the door from closing all the way. Try to reorganize the items inside the freezer so that they don’t interfere with the door closing. Even if the freezer or fridge isn’t too full, you should still check to ensure nothing is blocking the door from closing.

Check to ensure the door seal isn’t damaged or dirty, and replace or clean it as needed. Additionally, if you close the door too hard, that can prevent the door gasket from sealing properly. Try to softly close the door and see if that forms a good seal and stays shut.

When the door is out of alignment, it can prevent the door from closing tightly. Adjust the feet located on the bottom of the fridge so that the front is a tad bit higher than the back.

Another potential cause of a KitchenAid fridge freezer door not closing is that its hinges are not functioning properly. If this is the case, the hinges on the door will need to be removed and replaced.

Reasons Why KitchenAid Refrigerator Freezer Door Not Sealing Properly

Checking the refrigerator

Without a good seal, the KitchenAid refrigerator freezer cannot keep the items inside cool. And while this may be okay for a few hours, if the problem isn’t corrected quickly, all the perishable items inside the appliance will spoil and go to waste. Before you trash the fridge and buy a new one, however, let’s take a look at what could cause the KitchenAid appliance’s door to not seal properly.

The most common reasons why your KitchenAid refrigerator freezer door isn’t sealing properly are a dirty seal, the door is out of alignment, or the door seal is damaged. All of these reasons can cause the seal to not function as it is supposed to.

While a dirty or damaged seal and the door being out of alignment are some of the most common reasons why the door isn’t sealing properly, they are not the only ones. The fridge or freezer being too full, shutting the door too hard, and the door hinges being worn out can also cause problems with the door sealing.

The good news is that, in most cases, this problem can be easily fixed. The first thing to try is to clean the seal and make sure there is no damage. If you find damage to the door seal, simply remove the gasket and replace it with a new one.

You can also realign the door by adjusting the feet that are on the bottom of the fridge. Most appliances, such as KitchenAid fridge and freezers have small adjustable feet on the bottom that allow you to lower or raise the appliance a little by screwing them in or out. Try adjusting the feet so that the front of the fridge is a little higher than the back.

Check to also ensure that the fridge or freezer isn’t too full, since that will also prevent the door from closing and sealing. Rearrange items inside the fridge and freezer so that nothing is blocking the door seal from closing up tight.

The final potential cause of the door not sealing is that the hinges are old, worn out, or just plain faulty. If this is the cause, simply remove the hinges and replace them with new ones. This will require using a screwdriver to remove the old hinges from the door. Remember that the door could be rather heavy and you may want to enlist the help of a friend or family member to hold the door up while removing and replacing the hinges.
