KitchenAid Refrigerator Not Turning On (How to Fix)

Kitchenaid are one of the most well known refrigerator manufacturers, and they make a range of different sizes and styles of fridges. For a fridge to work it needs to be turned on, and the easiest way to tell if it is is that it will make a noise, or the internal light comes on when you open the door. Today, I will explain what to do if your Kitchenaid refrigerator is not turning on.

In general, check the wall outlet is supplying power by plugging something else into the wall outlet you’re using for your fridge. If the wall outlet is supplying power, there is an on/off switch for your fridge, but its location differs by model, and needs to be located using your owners manual.

If it’s getting power and turned on, then one of the internal components has failed. But, there are a few things that can happen that will give you the appearance your Kitchenaid fridge is not turned on when it is. Below, I will explain what these are, as well as, how to troubleshoot your Kitchenaid fridge when it won’t turn on.

KitchenAid Refrigerator Not Turning On (How To Fix)

For a Kitchenaid fridge to provide cooling it needs to both be receiving power, as well as, turned on. Therefore, you should first check that it’s getting power from the wall outlet. Here are the steps to take when your Kitchenaid fridge won’t turn on.

Overall, check that it’s plugged in, and verify the wall outlet is supplying power by plugging a different device into the same wall outlet. Then, ensure it’s turned on by checking the power switch. The location of the power switch differs by model, refer to your owners manual for its location.

There are a few things that can give the appearance that it’s not turned on, even though your Kitchenaid fridge is turned on. These are:

  • The internal light doesn’t come on when you open the door
  • The temperature is set too warm

The internal light can be blown, or the switch that controls it is broken. Therefore, when you open the door the light won’t come on. If this happens you can verify it quite easily, because your Kitchenaid fridge will still be cool.

It’s not necessary for the internal light to function for the fridge to function. Therefore, if it is broken then you don’t need to fix it right away or at all. But, it’s handy at night, and in low light conditions, such as on a rainy day.

There is also a temperature gauge on Kitchenaid fridges. It can be set to low, medium, or high. Some Kitchenaid fridges have a digital control.

Whereas, others have a dial typically located at the rear of the fridge. If it’s set too warm, the fridge will hardly be cold at all. And may not be noticeable in cold weather.

See if you can locate the temperature dial and see what it’s set to. If it’s set to the warmest temperature then turn it down to the middle setting. But, if it’s on the middle setting and it’s still not cold, then this is not the issue.

Reasons Why KitchenAid Refrigerator Is Not Turning On

When a Kitchenaid refrigerator is turned on it will make a humming noise every now and then, and when you open the door the internal light will come on. If none of these things happen, or you notice your Kitchenaid fridge is not cold then here is why this happens.

Overall, it’s not plugged in, the wall outlet is not supplying power, it’s not turned on, or there is an issue with one of the internal components. If you verify that it’s plugged in, the wall outlet is supplying power, and it’s turned on, you should contact Kitchenaid support.

The reason is that one of the internal components has failed, and is why your Kitchenaid fridge can’t turn on. Therefore, it requires a repair technician to fix it for you. It is possible to troubleshoot the internal components on your Kitchenaid fridge using a voltmeter.

But, it does require a fair amount of skill working with tools. The repair is also possibly covered under warranty.

Therefore, you should contact Kitchenaid first to see if the repair is covered under warranty. And then make a decision about whether you want to have a repair technician repair it for you. Or, if you want to attempt to repair it yourself.

Why KitchenAid Refrigerator Has No Power

A fridge will only stay cold for less than a day if it has no power. Therefore, it’s important for a fridge to be functioning all the time. If your fridge won’t cool, and doesn’t give any indication that it’s turned on and getting power, this is what you should do.

As a general rule, it’s not getting power from the wall outlet, or is not turned on. Kitchenaid refrigerators have a power switch, but the location of it differs by model, and is typically located under a removable cover. If it’s neither of these then one of the internal components has failed.

To check each of these steps refer to the step by step instructions outlined below that explain how to check for each of these issues, and then how to fix each of them.

In general, check it’s plugged into the wall outlet. If it is, then unplug it, and plug a different device into the same wall outlet to verify the wall outlet is supplying power. Provided, you’ve checked these two things, then ensure it’s turned on. How to check it’s turned on is explained below.

I’ve provided detailed instructions for how to do each of the steps that does not include checking it’s plugged into the wall outlet. Due to the fact that checking it’s plugged is not something that needs to be explained in detail. If your Kitchenaid fridge is plugged in then do the steps below.

1. Make sure the wall outlet is supplying power

The wall outlet should be checked to make sure it’s supplying power. It’s common for a fuse in a house to blow. When this happens the wall outlets in a specific part of a house won’t supply power.

To check the wall outlet, plug a different device into the same wall outlet. Typically something like a phone charger is the easiest because a smartphone is reasonably small. And typically you’ll always have one handy.

If the wall outlet is not supplying power then go to the switchboard in your home to see if one of the fuses has flipped into the off position. If it has then switch it back on.

2. Check that it’s turned on by checking the power switch

There is a power switch on Kitchenaid refrigerators. However, this is rarely used because a fridge is almost always left on all the time. The power switch can be located behind one of the panels.

But, it differs based on the specific model of Kitchenaid fridge that you have. If you have your paper owners manual handy refer to that to see where the power switch is. Otherwise, refer to this page on the official Kitchenaid website that allows you to download an online version of the owner’s manual.

It also shows you where to find the model number for your Kitchenaid fridge. If you try all of these steps and your Kitchenaid refrigerator still won’t turn on, then there is likely a mechanical fault with your Kitchenaid fridge that requires a repair technician to fix. It’s possible the repair is covered under warranty.

You should contact Kitchenaid support to see if the repair is covered under warranty. They can also tell you whether your fridge needs to be repaired or replaced. And the process to do so.
