LG Monitor Screen Issues (How To Fix)

Black Monitor on the desk

Whether you are working from home or browsing the internet, you need a working monitor. It can be extremely frustrating when your computer monitor doesn’t work correctly. If your LG monitor has screen issues, how can you fit it?

If your LG monitor screen has issues, make sure the monitor is correctly connected to the computer. Any loose connections will disrupt the digital feed. Inspect the monitor cable for any broken or bent pins. Make sure there is no dust or other debris inside the connection ports.

Computer monitors have come a long way not only in their design but also in their performance. Even though there have been great technological advances in monitors, they are not immune to problems. One of the most common reasons for issues with an LG monitor is connection related.

A bad connection, whether from the cables or the power source, will present as a monitor issue. Some basic troubleshooting can help you quickly identify if this is the cause of your monitor’s issues.

The LG monitor needs to be plugged into a working wall outlet, not a power strip. The power strip may not be providing a sufficient or stable amount of electricity to the monitor.

If the monitor is already connected to a wall outlet, test the outlet to ensure it is indeed working. Unplug the monitor and plug in a small lamp or other appliance to see if it works. If the lamp or small appliance works, you know the outlet is not the cause of the problem.

Inspect the power cord and connection cables between the monitor and computer. Any signs of visible damage mean the fibers inside the cable are also damaged.

A power cord that has frayed or has burn marks should be replaced immediately. These signs of damage present a more serious problem since the problem could be electrical-related, which is a fire hazard. A qualified electrician can safely and easily diagnose the issue.

It is also good to make sure the connections are in the correct ports and are secure. A loose connection will make the monitor appear as though it is not working when, in actuality, there is nothing wrong with the monitor.

Depending on the model of monitor you have, if the monitor cable has VGA or DVI cables, make sure the connectors are screwed into place. This will ensure a more secure connection. For all other connections, make sure they are connected to the correct port.

LG Monitor Screen Flickering/Flashes On And Off

Black Monitor on the desk

Is your LG monitor screen flickering/flashes on and off? The solution may be simpler than you think.

If your LG monitor screen is flickering/flashing on and off, the screen refresh rate is set too low. The display cable is loose or damaged. The graphics driver needs to be updated. There could be incompatible apps on the computer.

Computer monitors seem like complicated machines, but they really are simple in how they operate. Oftentimes it is the smallest and simplest of things that causes the monitor to stop working correctly

Refresh Rate

The human eye is one of the many members of the body that we take for granted. It observes the tiniest of details that often go unnoticed. When it comes to our monitors, the human eye can detect when the screen is refreshing.

When a screen refreshes, it is redrawn. The refresh rate is how many seconds it takes the monitor to redraw the information. A flickering monitor is your eye witnessing the screen refreshing.

Under normal circumstances, you should not see the screen refreshing. If you are now noticing, be thankful you have good eyesight and then increase the refresh rate.

The following steps will walk you through how to increase the refresh rate.

Step 1: Go to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Display.

Step 3: Go to Advanced Display Settings.

Step 4: Select Display Adapter Properties for Display 1.

Step 5: In the menu option box that pops up, select the tab for Monitor.

Step 6: Select Screen Refresh Rate.

Step 7: Adjust the refresh rate to a higher setting. If the flickering continues, increase the refresh rate.

Power Source

Most of us have our computers connected to a power strip. While the power strip is great in the event there is a power surge, the electromagnetic fields created by other connected appliances can create interference with your LG monitor.

Unplug these other appliances and move them away from the monitor. If they were the cause of the screen flickering, the issue will resolve itself fairly quickly.

App Updates

The majority of app publishers provide automatic updates to their apps. These updates are how the app improves. New data is installed that improves the app performance, fixes software bugs, and improves security features.

If an update is slow in coming, the app’s performance could affect how your monitor works while using this app. Here are the steps to automatically install any pending app updates.

Step 1: Click on the Windows Start Logo.

Step 2: Navigate to the Microsoft Store app.

Step 3: Once you are in the store, open the account menu and select App Settings.

Step 4: Select the option to update apps automatically.

Graphics Driver

The graphics driver is how all of the graphic components of your computer – from pictures to videos, work with the rest of your computer. The driver should automatically update however, like everything else around us, it is not a perfect system.

A pending update will affect how the graphics and video display works on your LG monitor. Updating the graphics driver is not as intimidating as it may seem. Follow these simple steps to see if an outdated graphics driver is the source of your troubles.

Step 1: Right-click on the Windows Start Logo and select Device Manager.

Step 2: Click on the arrow next to Display Adapters.

Step 3: Once the box expands, right-click on your computer’s graphic device.

Step 4: Click on Update Driver.

Step 5: If updating the driver does not resolve the issue, uninstall the driver and then reinstall it.

Step 6: Restart your computer to refresh everything.

LG Monitor Vertical Lines On Screen

Confused woman standing

Vertical lines will ruin any image on your monitor but it presents a special irritation if you use your LG monitor for gaming. What does it mean when your LG monitor has vertical lines on the screen?

If your LG monitor has vertical lines on the screen, test the picture to determine whether the lines are coming from the monitor, the computer, or another input source. Disconnect all cable connections and any Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections to the monitor.

Once everything is disconnected, return to the menu screen and see if the vertical lines are gone. If they are gone, the problem was caused by one of the connections. If the lines are still there, the issue could lie within the monitor itself.

Run System Scan

A system scan is your computer’s self-diagnostic tool. A full scan will inspect all drivers, files, apps, and software for any signs of an issue. A full scan will take several minutes but every inch of the computer’s operating system will be inspected.

Step 1: Go to your computer’s Settings.

Step 2: Select Privacy & Security.

Step 3: Select Virus & Threat Protection,

Step 4: Under Current Threats is an option for a Quick Scan or you can click on Scan Options and select Full Scan.

Black Monitor on the desk

Does your LG monitor have horizontal lines on the screen? Here are some reasons why this is happening.

If your LG monitor has horizontal lines on the screen, turn the monitor and let it cool before restarting it. Restart your computer to remove any software glitches. Try connecting a different monitor to your computer to determine if the lines are from the screen or the computer itself.

Oftentimes horizontal lines are the result of the computer overheating. If your computer or laptop is used on a soft surface such as a blanket or pillow, the heat becomes trapped inside the computer’s operating system and it can overheat, resulting in horizontal lines on the screen.

Interference

It is probably safe to say that the majority of computer users out there use their computer in a room that is close to a microwave, a TV, a cell phone, or other appliances that are wirelessly connected. These other appliances and electronics create interference.

Too much interference can affect your computer monitor. Disconnect any electronics that are not in use. Move the computer further away from other appliances.

Run Troubleshooter

Troubleshooter is another diagnostic tool your computer uses to detect any issues within its operating system or software.

Step 1: Go to your computer’s Settings.

Step 2: Select System.

Step 3: Scroll down to Troubleshoot.

Step 4: Select Other Troubleshooters.

Step 5: Scroll down to the section titled ‘Other’.

LG Monitor Screen Tearing

Confused man standing

Are you seeing multiple frames in a single frame on your monitor? Your monitor has screen tearing. Here is why your monitor screen is tearing.

If your LG monitor screen has tearing, reduce the Frames Per Second refresh rate of your monitor. Increasing the refresh rate to the maximum will provide a crisp image in the beginning but it will eventually cause screen tearing because the monitor has a higher input lag.

Screen tearing happens when the video to the monitor is not synchronized with the monitor’s refresh rate. Monitors that are used for gaming or other full-screen programs that require a high refresh rate have a Game Mode setting. Disabling this setting will resolve the tearing issue.

Step 1: Press the Windows Logo key and the #1 keys together.

Step 2: When the Settings menu opens, select Gaming.

Step 3: On the left side of the menu, select the Game bar option.

Step 4: Toggle the game bar switch to Off.

Step 5: On the left side of the pane, select Broadcasting.

Step 6: Go to the right panel and toggle the switch to Record audio when I broadcast.

Step 7: Restart your computer.

Black Monitor on the desk

You turn on your computer and as soon as the monitor wakes up, the screen goes white. A white screen can sometimes signal a hardware issue, but here are some other things to try before you shop for a new monitor.

If possible, try connecting another monitor to the computer. This will most certainly let you know whether or not the issue lies with the monitor itself.

Another possibility for a white screen is if the backlight is not working. If something has come loose or disconnected, the screen will appear white.

A simple, yet effective, way to test if the white screen is caused by a loose backlight connection is to tap the back of your monitor. If the screen flickers, you know the backlight connection is the problem.

LG Monitor Brightness Keeps Changing

Black Monitor on the desk

LG monitors are designed in such a way that they can automatically detect changes in the light around us. The monitor will adjust the screen brightness accordingly. While this can be very helpful, it can also be very distracting at times.

The main reason for the brightness was meant to be a helpful setting built within the LG monitor. The monitor is automatically set to Energy Saving mode. This means the monitor will automatically adjust the screen brightness depending on the amount of light it senses around it.

While this feature can save your battery life, it is often more of an annoyance than a help, especially if you work near a window. Because this is a built-in feature, you will not be able to simply adjust the screen’s display brightness. The Energy Saving feature itself will need to be disabled.
