LG TV Hulu Not Working

Hulu has a ton of popular live TV channels, as well as, an extensive library of TV shows, and movies. But, I’ve been helping a friend Hulu working on their LG TV and I couldn’t get it to work. So, I looked through exactly what to do when Hulu isn’t working on an LG TV, and here’s what I found.

If Hulu is not working on an LG TV, a common cause is outdated TV firmware or app version. To resolve this, check for and install any available updates for both the LG TV’s operating system and the Hulu app through the TV’s settings or app store.

Another reason could be cache-related problems within the Hulu app. Over time, the cache can become overloaded or corrupted, causing the app to malfunction. To fix this, try clearing the cache and data for the Hulu app in the TV’s settings menu. This can help to refresh the app’s environment and potentially resolve any issues that are causing it to not work properly.

Network connectivity issues can also lead to Hulu not working on an LG TV. If the internet connection is unstable or too slow, it can prevent the Hulu app from functioning properly. To fix this, check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and consider restarting your router. Sometimes, reconnecting your LG TV to the network can solve these connectivity issues.

LG TV Hulu Not Loading/Opening

The main issue I was running into is that when I selected the Hulu app it wouldn’t open. Based on my research there are a few simple fixes to try in order to get it working.

The overall way to get the Hulu app to work on an LG TV when it won’t open is to close and reopen the app, and uninstall and reinstall the Hulu app. There is also a folder of files known as the cache. When it gets full it can use too much memory and clearing the apps cache can get it working again.

There are also some things to check that aren’t related to the app itself such as your internet connection, and turning your LG TV on and off again. Here’s a summary of exactly how to do each of these steps:

Step 1. Close and reopen the Hulu App

Sometimes the Hulu App itself can freeze, and it can be fixed by closing it and reopening it again. Each LG TV remote is slightly different, but for most LG TVs you just need to hold down the ‘Home’ button on your remote and then the apps that are open will display on the bottom of the screen. Once you see the open apps, use the arrow buttons on your remote to highlight the Hulu app.

Once it’s highlighted press the ‘Up’ arrow on your remote. That will show an ‘X’ above the app – in this case the Hulu app. Then press the middle button to select the ‘X’ which will close the Hulu app.

Then select the Hulu app from your home screen to reopen it. If after doing that it still won’t work then move on to step 2 below.

Step 2. Check Your Internet Connection

If your internet isn’t connected it can cause the Hulu app not to open. To check that you’ve got a good internet connection, open up a website on a smartphone, laptop, or tablet that’s on the same Wi-Fi as your LG TV.

For example, a smartphone can connect to the internet via mobile data such as 3G or 4G. But, it can also connect to the internet via Wi-Fi through your wireless router. Make sure that your mobile data is off and that you’re only using Wi-Fi on your smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Then try to open up a webpage like Youtube and see if it loads.

If it loads normally then your internet connection is working fine. Therefore, something else is causing the issue, and you should do the next step below.

Step 3: Turn Your TV On and Off

This step is very easy. Just press the power button on your LG TV remote to put it on stand by. Then you can pull the plug out, wait for 10 to 30 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on again.

That will force all the apps to close and when you turn it back on they will open again fresh. If it’s still not working then you should check that the Hulu app on your LG TV is the latest version.

Step 4: Check for update in the app store

Automatic updates are typically on by default. But, having the latest version of the Hulu app will mean it’s less susceptible to crashing. And updating it can resolve the issue when the above steps didn’t work. To do that go to the Settings menu which can be accessed from the home screen. Then select ‘General’, ‘About this TV’, and then ‘Check for Updates’.

Step 5: Clear cache and data

An app works a bit like a web browser such as Google Chrome or Safari and when you visit a page it will download the images to your computer so that it loads faster the next time you go to the website. However, when your cache gets full it can use more memory which can crash the app.

Also, some of the files can get corrupted and cause the Hulu app to not work. Therefore, if you’re experiencing issues you should clear the Hulu app cache. To clear the cache go the Settings on your LG TV by selecting it from the home screen. Then select the following:

  1. Apps
  2. Hulu
  3. Storage
  4. Clear Cache and Clear Data

Final Step: Uninstall and reinstall the Hulu App

Here’s a short video which shows exactly how to uninstall an app on your LG TV.

Do this on your Hulu app. It’s very easy to install it again. And to do that go to the LG Content Store, it can be accessed by holding down the home button on your LG remote to bring up a carousel menu at the bottom of the screen. It’s located on the far right of the options that come up on the bottom of the screen.

Open up the LG Content Store by selecting it. After that you need to find the Hulu app, in the list of apps. Then select it using the center button on your remote and select install. That will install the Hulu app again.

LG TV Hulu Black/Blank Screen/No Picture

Sometimes the Hulu app might open on your LG TV, but it will only display a black screen. To get it work here’s what you do…

When the Hulu app displays a blank screen on your LG TV it’s because the app has crashed, or you don’t have an internet connection. To get it working again, close and reopen the app, and check that your internet connection is working correctly.

There are detailed instructions for closing the Hulu app and opening it again, as well as, how to check your internet connection. Also, if neither of these work then it’s a good idea to go through each of the steps above to fix the issue.

Hulu App Not Supported on LG TV

Certain LG TVs do support the Hulu app but only the classic version. Whereas, other LG TVs can’t install the Hulu app at all. Here’s what TVs will work with the Hulu app.

Hulu states that their app only works on the following LG TVs:

  • Those that have at least webOS 3.5
  • Certain webOS 3.0 devices except for the UH6330, UH6350, B6. And the UH77, UH76, and UH61 series TVs.
  • Those that run Roku TV.

If your LG TV isn’t of these then the Hulu App won’t work.

However, you can use a streaming stick such as an Amazon Fire TV stick to use Hulu. An Amazon Fire TV stick runs separately to the apps on your LG TV. A streaming stick plugs into one of the HDMI ports on your TV, and you can then access all of the apps that they have by putting your LG TV on that HDMI port.

Hulu comes already installed on most streaming sticks, or you can install it. However, it pays to check before getting one to see that it’s compatible with Hulu. The Amazon Fire TV stick is very popular and definitely has it. It’s also fairly inexpensive at around $50 with no ongoing fees.
