Having the HBO Max channel available on Roku is a great way to combine HBO content with other streaming services. However, if your HBO Max channel is no longer working on your Roku device, this makes paying for the subscription a waste of money. To get the best out of this channel, I have put together a number of reasons why your HBO Max channel is not working on your Roku device, and how you can fix it.
HBO Max will not work on a Roku device if it is running an OS older than Roku 9.3 or if your location is not supported. In addition to this, poor internet connection, disrupted servers, firmware bugs, the wrong audio/visual settings or insufficient space on your Roku can also disrupt HBO Max.
There are many ways that you can rectify these issues, which I have explained in more detail below. It is important to also understand general troubleshooting for your Roku channels because these tend to work for most situations.
Roku HBO Max Not Working
HBO Max may not be working on your Roku device for any number of reasons. However, there are troubleshooting tips, detailed below, that will fix most issues you are having with the channel. You can find even more solutions to specific issues throughout this article.
Update HBO Max and Roku Device
Updating your Roku device will automatically update all channels on that device as well. Therefore, follow the steps below to update both the Roku and HBO channel. This should clear any firmware bugs that are preventing the channel from working.
Step 1: Press the ‘Home’ button on the Roku remote.
Step 2: Navigate to ‘Settings > System > System Updates’.
Step 3: Select ‘Check Now’.
Step 4: Follow the prompts to install any available updates.
Check Internet Connection
Many issues with a streaming channel, such as HBO Max, occur because of unknown internet issues. You can check the status of your internet connection using your Roku device, as well as your download speed. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Home’ button on the Roku.
Step 2: Navigate to ‘Settings > Network’.
Step 3: Select ‘Check Connection’.
If the connection is successful, this means that you have internet access on your Roku device. However, the most important thing to check is the signal strength and download speed. These can also be found in the ‘Network’ menu, under ‘About’.
HBO Max requires a minimum of 5MB/s in order to stream HD content without any issues. Anything less than that and the stream will pause or may not load at all.
Restart your Roku Device
Restarting the Roku is a good way of resetting unseen software errors. This can be done through the pathway below.
Home > Settings > System > System Restart
Reinstall the HBO Max App
If the HBO Max channel is not working, but the Roku seems fine, you should try uninstalling and reinstalling the HBO Max channel. This will clear any unnecessary data from the app and install the latest firmware. You can do this following the steps below.
Step 1: Highlight the HBO Max channel in Roku Home.
Step 2: Press the ‘Options’ button (star button) on the remote.
Step 3: Select ‘Remove Channel’ and then ‘Remove’.
Step 4: Restart the Roku (detailed above).
Step 5: Open the Roku Channel Store.
Step 6: Find and install the HBO Max channel again.
Roku HBO Max Login/Sign-in Problems
If you are having trouble signing in to HBO Max, make sure you are entering the correct email and password. Keep in mind that the password is case sensitive.
If you have forgotten your password, you can try resetting it. Otherwise, you could also try restarting the Roku, reinstalling the HBO Max channel or exploring the possibilities below.
Check Your Subscription
If your subscription has expired, you will need to renew your subscription before signing back in successfully. This can be done through the HBO Max website. However, you should normally still be able to sign into the channel on your Roku.
The Servers are Down
The HBO Max and Roku servers could also be overloaded at any point in time due to high demand. This is common when a new show is released and needs to be fixed by HMO Max or Roku. All you can do is try again at a later time.
You can check if the servers are down through a website such as Down Detector. You can check the servers for HBO Max here or check the Roku servers here.
Roku HBO Max Not Loading/Opening
When HBO Max is not loading or opening, this can be due to the Roku or HBO servers, as mentioned above. However, it is more likely a result of internet issues. If you have checked your connection (detailed above) and you need to improve your internet, below are a number of troubleshooting tips you can try.
Restart Your Modem/Router
The simplest troubleshooting method for poor internet is to restart your modem and router. This will force these devices to reset any firmware errors and re-establish a connection with your Roku device. This can be done using the steps below.
Step 1: Unplug your modem and router (if you have one) from their power source.
Step 2: Wait at least one minute as they power down.
Step 3: Plug your modem back into the power and wait for it to reboot.
Step 4: Once the modem has fully rebooted, plug the router back in and wait for it to reboot.
Step 5: Check your internet again.
Move the Modem or Roku Device (>1ft, <30ft)
Make sure your modem/router and Roku device are close enough that they can form a strong internet connection. Usually having the two in the same room is the perfect setup. However, even this can be disrupted, which I will explain further down.
If you are able to move your modem/router or Roku device, make sure they are still within 30 feet of one another, but more than one foot apart. If your Roku is a greater distance than 30 feet, you should consider using a WiFi booster in your home.
Eliminate Interference
Interference can come from anywhere within the home. You need to consider both solid objects and transmitting devices around your home, because both can disrupt your WiFi. Below are a number of solid objects that should not be between your Roku device and modem/router.
· Metal
· Thick concrete or timber walls
· Water (eg. aquariums or hydronic heating)
For this reason, you shouldn’t keep your Roku device shut away in a cabinet, even if it is glass. The other thing to consider is wireless transmissions from within your house. These have been listed below.
· Bluetooth devices (eg. headphones)
· Other networks in the area
· Baby monitors or other radios
· Microwaves
Even the TV can act like a barrier to your WiFi connection. This is why it is important to keep your Roku device out from behind the TV (if possible). A Roku Streaming Stick cannot be moved from this position, but you could consider a HDMI extender to move it further away from the back of the TV.
Check Your Service Provider
If you have slow internet, make sure your service provider is not restricting your download speed. There are different internet plans that you can go on that may be affecting you. If the internet is out completely, check that your service provider is not doing any maintenance nearby or experiencing any outages.
Use an Ethernet Cable
An Ethernet cable will provide the fastest available internet on your network. For this reason, if your download speed is slow and you suspect this is causing your issues, you should try an Ethernet cable. This could be temporary to see if it solves the issue, or you could set it up permanently to get the best out of your internet.
Roku HBO Max Sound/Audio/Volume Not Working
Check TV Volume and Audio Settings
HBO Max volume can be affected by simple settings such as your volume or audio settings. First, make sure that the volume on your TV or speakers are not too low or muted.
You should then make sure that you have the correct audio output selected on your TV. This should be found under the ‘Audio’ or ‘Sound’ settings. If you do not have a speaker, the audio should be set to the TV speakers.
Some HBO Max movies or TV shows may not be compatible with Dolby Digital audio. For this reason, you may need to toggle the Audio Mode on your Roku device to ‘Stereo’. This can be done through the pathway below.
Home > Settings > Audio > Audio Mode > Stereo

Check Your Cables
Sometimes the sound can be affected by issues with your HDMI or speaker cables. These cables can be loose or faulty. If the sound still doesn’t work after reinserting the cable, try it with another device to see if it works.
You should also try different HDMI ports to test whether one is broken. Your TV instruction manual should guide you with which ports are better to use for streaming devices.
Roku Not Showing Up / Available / Found on HBO Max
Your Roku Device is Not Compatible
HBO Max will only work on a Roku device that has Roku 9.3 or later installed. This means that older Roku models will not support the HBO Max app. However, you may still be able to use HBO Max on another device and mirror the streaming service to your TV.
This can be done using Roku’s mirroring settings and casting your phone on the same network. You can make your Roku available to mirror through the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Home’ button on your remote
Step 2: Navigate to ‘Settings > System > Screen Mirroring’.
Step 3: Select ‘Prompt’ or ‘Always Allow’.
Your Region Is Not Supported
If you are travelling outside the US, your HBO Max channel may not be supported. HBO Max will only work in the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Anywhere outside these areas would require a VPN to access HBO content.
Roku HBO Max Won’t Download Install / Update
HBO Max will not download, install or update if you have issues with your internet connection. Troubleshooting tips for this can be found above, including how you can test your internet connection.
HBO Max Keeps Freezing/Crashing on Roku
If your HBO Max channel keeps freezing or crashing, this can also be due to internet issues. Streaming content from the HBO Max servers involves downloading the movie or TV show as you watch it. There will always be more content downloaded than you have watched so that the stream doesn’t pause, which is known as the buffer.

If your internet is slow, the content will download slower than the playback speed and the buffer will soon run out. This will make the channel appear to be freezing constantly. Refer to the information above to fix this.
Another possibility is that there is not enough space on your Roku device. However, there are a number of ways you can fix this issue.
Not Enough Space
Installing new channels takes up more and more space on your Roku device. However, each channel will also continuously store more data, in the form of temporary files, which can also take up space. Unfortunately you cannot check how much free space is available on the Roku, but you can still free it up.
If you suspect that your HBO Max channel may be crashing because of limited storage space, you should delete unused channels or clear the temporary data from each channel. This is most important to do with the HBO Max channel.
To delete an unused channel, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Home’ button on the remote.
Step 2: Open ‘Streaming Channels’.
Step 3: Find and select the channel you wish to delete.
Step 4: Select ‘Remove Channel’.
To delete the temporary files from a channel, known as the cache, you will need to reinstall the app. You can find the correct procedure for this at the beginning of this article. Restarting the Roku device is very important in ensuring that the cache is fully clear before reinstalling the channel.
Roku Won’t Play HBO Max
When the Roku device won’t play HBO Max, you should try the troubleshooting tips mentioned throughout this article. In particular, make sure your internet connection is strong and the download speed is greater than 5MB/s.
Roku HBO Max Black/Blank Screen/No Picture
A blank screen when using HBO Max could be due to incompatible resolution between your TV and Roku device, or it could be an issue with your cable. You can find more details on these issues below.
Incompatible Resolution
A Roku device will normally detect your TV’s resolution and set it accordingly to ensure that the two are compatible. Incompatibility is what may cause your screen to go blank or flicker.
Roku has a number of resolution options available, including 720p, 1080p and various 4K options. You can cycle between these options by following the pathway below.
Home > Settings > Display Type
If your screen is only blank intermittently, you can change these settings though your Roku device. However, if your screen is permanently blank, you may need to change these settings on your laptop using the Roku app.
Issues with the HDMI Connection
A loose HDMI cable will cause the screen to go blank on your Roku display. Therefore, make sure that you have secured the cable at both connection points. You may also need to check the cable with another device to make sure it isn’t faulty.
The HDMI port you choose also makes a difference to your Roku display. Some ports are not designed for high-quality content such as 4K streaming. This puts a larger load on the transfer speed through the HDMI port, and therefore you should try to use HDMI ports labelled as 4K compatible.
In a similar way, the HDMI cable also needs to be 4K compatible when streaming 4K content. 4K or 8K HDMI cables allow data to be transferred at a much faster rate, allowing the video signal to keep up with the playback of the movie or TV show.
HBO Max Not Connecting on Roku
HBO Max will not connect to your Roku device if the servers are down, as I mentioned earlier, or if the internet is not working. Sometimes there may be small errors in the software that can be fixed by restarting the channel or Roku, so you should try all troubleshooting methods mentioned in this article.
Keep in mind that your location also makes a difference to whether or not you can connect to HBO Max. If you are on holidays, you may need to consider a VPN to access your HBO content.
