Whirlpool Washer Is Not Spinning Fast (How To Fix)

We expect our Whirlpool washer to work every time we use it. Unfortunately, there may be times when it is not spinning fast enough. What could be wrong and what can be done to fix it?

A common reason why a Whirlpool washer is not spinning fast is that the water level hose is clogged. If it is clogged, it may not send water to the sensor and the machine will not spin quickly because it is not getting the proper signals.

Fortunately, this issue is easy to fix. It is also a rather inexpensive part and sometimes, you don’t even have to replace it.

The water level hose can be removed by taking off two panels on the back of the washing machine. On the top panel, you would disconnect the water level hose from the sensor, and at the bottom panel, you would disconnect the hose from the entry port.

Once the hose has been removed, you can begin checking it to see what is wrong. You might try running some water through it and if it is clogged, you can try blowing through the hose to force any lint or other item that is clogging it out.

If there was something blocking the hose, you can reconnect it to your Whirlpool washer once it has been cleared. Run a test cycle to see if it is still working.

Whirlpool Washer Is Not Spinning Fast (How To Fix)

Although it may be simple to correct some of the issues associated with a Whirlpool washer not spinning fast, there are others that can be more complex. In addition, you need to be cautious whenever you are opening up a panel and possibly exposing yourself to live electricity.

The first step in the process when it comes to working on your Whirlpool washer is to unplug it. Never work on a washing machine that is still energized. If you are unable to reach the receptacle easily, you can turn off the circuit breaker.

Secondly, make sure that you protect yourself by wearing the appropriate safety equipment. Anytime you are doing a DIY project, these factors should be considered.

Safety Glasses – Always wear safety glasses when doing any DIY project. It only takes a moment for your eyes to become permanently damaged and safety glasses are your best option to save them.

Gloves – Wear some all-purpose gloves for this type of project. If you need to have the dexterity of your bare hands, you can temporarily remove your gloves but it is always a good idea to have them on when you are doing any work unless they increase your risk for injury.

In addition to this, never get your hands somewhere that you can’t see them. This can be difficult because you will have to reach in to remove parts at times, but if it is at all possible, keep your hands in plain view.

We are now going to consider a few different reasons why a Whirlpool washer is not spinning fast. These are factors that are specific to Whirlpool washers in some cases and we will tell you how to fix them as well.

Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning Fast: Overloaded

One issue that can cause a Whirlpool washer to stop spinning quickly is if it is overloaded. This is a common problem, and it is one that is also easily corrected.

Like many washing machines, a Whirlpool washer is only set up to handle so much weight. If you are overloading it with too many items or the wrong type of items, it could easily put it over that limit.

The easiest way to correct this problem is to simply remove some of the items. If you have large, bulky items such as comforters or pet beds, you may need to come up with another solution.

In many homes with Whirlpool washing machines, there are certain items taken to a laundry mat. It may cost a little money to get them cleaned by using the proper washer and dryer that can handle the load but it is going to save you in the long run.

Another thing that can cause an overloading problem in a Whirlpool washer is for the washer not to be spinning properly. This is another issue, but it is one to consider.

If a Whirlpool washer does not spin properly, it will not drain properly. Something similar can happen if a drain hose is clogged, and we will cover that later in this article.

Make sure that the spin cycle is going through properly so you aren’t overtaxing the Whirlpool washer every time you use it.

Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning Fast: Lid Switch

Adjusting the button of the washer

There are times when a Whirlpool washer may not spin fast because the lid switch is not working properly. This is a safety feature that protects the user by stopping the machine from operating if the lid is open.

Unfortunately, the lid switch is also the most vulnerable part of the washing machine in many cases. It’s typically a small piece of plastic that is easily broken if it is put under too much stress.

That is problematic because most people with Whirlpool washers tend to drop the lid rather than lower it slowly. This can cause the plastic to break and if it does, then it will not sense that the lid is closed.

The biggest problem with the lid switch is the fact that it may not shut the machine off altogether. The movement of the Whirlpool washer during the spin cycle may cause it to disengage and engage frequently.

As a result, the Whirlpool washer is going to constantly want to stop the spin cycle. It will not stop it completely because it continues to run, but it may slow down the spin cycle considerably as a result of miscommunication.

Fortunately, this is also an easy problem to fix. If the lid switch is not operating properly, it can be removed and replaced. This is just a matter of removing a couple of screws and getting the new part.

The lid switch is part of a bigger unit that senses when the lid is open. You may find that there are other issues associated with it as well that can be checked with a multimeter.

Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning Fast: Loose Bolts

A problem that can occur in some Whirlpool washers is for bolts to come loose. As the machine continues to operate, it can loosen the bolts further and keep things from working as they should.

If a Whirlpool washer has loose bolts, they should be tightened because they can interfere with the ability of the washing machine to spin fast. Remove the back panel and do a visual inspection.

If you see any bolts that are either missing or loose on the drum or motor, they should be tightened or replaced. The bolts are there for a reason, to hold things in place during the normal operation of your Whirlpool washer.

While you have the back off of the machine, check the belts and make sure that they are in good condition as well. They should be reasonably taught and free of cracking and damage.

If you see any belts that are experiencing problems, they can also be replaced at this time. If a belt is loose or is not operating as it should, it can keep the Whirlpool washer from spinning as quickly as it could.

Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning Fast: Drain Hoses

One other key area of the washing machine that should be checked is the drain hose. Part of this is external and part of it is internal.

If there is any problem with the drain hose that is keeping the water from draining as it should, the washing machine is not going to spin. During the spin cycle, the washing machine forces water out of the items in the washer and it goes out of the drain.

Your Whirlpool washer is able to detect if the water is draining properly or not. You also be able to detect it, because your clothing will come out of the washing machine soaking wet and heavy. You might find that the drying time for the clothing has increased recently.

Remove the drain hose and visually inspect it. Look for any kinked areas that could keep the drainage from happening properly. You can also run water from a garden hose through it at full blast to force out any object that may be keeping the water from flowing freely down the drain.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to replace the drain hose as well. They can be ordered and on the machine in no time at all.
